Programs of Study

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures offers graduate and undergraduate courses in the languages, literatures, and cultures of France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Latin America, and Spain.

The language program includes a wide range of courses from introductory through conversation and composition to civilization. The literature program treats all periods of literature from both historical and critical-theoretical perspectives. These courses emphasize the close reading of texts and modern theories of literary criticism, particularly those based on contemporary philosophy, psychoanalysis, anthropology, and linguistics.

In addition, an active program of visiting professors and lecturers complements the core program offered by the faculty-in-residence.
