Undergraduate

The Portuguese Language Program offers undergraduate courses in elementary, intermediate, and advanced Portuguese, as well as a single-semester course in Brazilian culture and civilization. The language courses are designed to introduce and familiarize students with the sounds and structure of the language, while at the same time, immerse them in the culture and civilization of Brazil, Portugal, and the Portuguese-speaking countries of Africa and Asia.

Interested students are encouraged to study abroad during their junior year and to participate in other international programs.

Johns Hopkins does not offer a major or minor in the language or literatures of the Lusophone world, but there is a minor in Latin American studies with a focus on Portuguese language and Brazilian culture, and Portuguese is also offered as a third language option in the romance languages major.

Students interested in pursuing Portuguese as a language of concentration should speak with the director of Portuguese undergraduate studies.
