SPANISH MAJOR

Requirements consist of successful completion of, with a grade of B or better, language courses through 210.212 Intermediate Spanish II or 210.213 Advanced Intermediate, or equivalent placement; 210.311 Advanced Spanish I; 210.312 Advanced Spanish II; 215.231 or 232 Introduction to Literature in Spanish I or II; a combination of five courses from the 215.200-400 series, distributed between the cultures and literatures of Latin America and Spain. One of these five courses may be from another department such as Anthropology, History, Political Science, and so forth as long as it is on Latin America or Spain. 210.413 Curso de Perfeccionamiento or 211.280 Latin American Culture or 211.290 Modern Spanish culture may also count as one of these five courses. Students placing out of 210.311 Advanced Spanish I and /or 215.312 Advanced Spanish II will take instead a 215.xxx Literature or 211.xxx Spanish/Latin Amercian Culture class or 210.317 Advanced Composition may also be taken if placing out of 210.312 Advanced Spanish II. Native speakers should consult with the Spanish major adviser. It is strongly recommended that majors spend one semester abroad and/or attend summer or intersession programs. Currently, the department offers a Fall Program in Madrid, Spain, and also endorses the intersession Exchange Program with Cuba, as well as the Argentina and Peru Summer Programs organized by the Program on Latin American Studies. Students should consult with the directors of undergraduate studies or their department adviser prior to studying abroad.

Prerequisites:

A. Language courses through 210.212 Intermediate Spanish II or 210.213 Advanced Intermediate Spanish, or equivalent placement

A. 210.311 Advanced Spanish I, or an additional 215.xxx course or 211.xxx Spanish or Latin American Culture course
B. 210.312 Advanced Spanish II, or an additional 215.xxx course or 211.xxx Spanish or Latin American Culture course or 
     210.317 Advanced Composition

C. 215.231 or 215.232 Introduction to Literature in Spanish I or II
D. 5 courses from 215.2xx-215.4xx series, distributed between Spain and Latin America (One may be form another department as long as it is on Latin America or Spain or may be 210.413 Curso de Perfeccionamiento or 211.280 Latin American Culture or 211.290 Modern Spanish Culture)

SPANISH LANGUAGE AND HISPANIC CULTURE MINOR

The minor in Spanish language and cultures will consist of six courses beyond the 210.212 Intermediate level as explained below. It is also recommended that Spanish minors study abroad for a semester, a summer or an intersession. With the approval of the Director of Undergraduate Studies or the Director of the Spanish Language Program, only two Spanish language courses taken abroad (in programs other than Hopkins) or at another institution may be used toward the minor, and only one additional Spanish language course will be approved for credit (but this course will not count toward the minor).  

Students wishing to transfer credit from language courses taken elsewhere should contact Loreto Sánchez-Serrano for approval.  You will be required to take the Departmental Placement Test upon your return to Hopkins as part of the requirements for transferring the credits.

Students must complete six courses beyond the 210.212 Intermediate level that must include the following: 210.311 Advanced Spanish I; 210.312 Advanced Spanish II or 210.317 Advanced Spanish Composition; 215.231 Introduction to Literature in Spanish; and three additional courses to be chosen from 210.413 Curso de perfeccionamiento or 211.280 Modern Latin American Culture or 211.290 Modern Spanish Culture or any course from the 215.200-400 Spanish literature series (at least one of them must be from the 300-400 level). Students placing out of 210.311 Advanced Spanish I may take instead a 215.xxx Literature or 211.xxx Culture class.

Native speakers should consult with the Spanish minor adviser.

Students may complete a Romance language major in one of two configurations: by specializing in two or three of the Romance Languages offered by the department.
