INTENSIVE LANGUAGE PROGRAM

Students will attend orientation sessions and an intensive language program at the Escuela Internacional in Salamanca for approximately two weeks before returning to Madrid to meet their host families and begin classes at Carlos III.

HOUSING AND BOARD

Students in the program live with Spanish families selected by the Hopkins housing coordinator. All homes are located in central Madrid, with easy access to transport lines. Families provide breakfast and dinner every day and lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Weekly laundry service is included.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM

In mid-September students enroll at the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid.  Founded in 1989, Carlos III is on of the few institutions in Spain that has adopted the American model of higher education.

Students choose courses from the multi-disciplinary offerings of the Curso de Estudios Hispanicos, a program specifically designed for international students.

The plan of studies is varied and flexible, with courses in

  • Humanities Building
    art history
  • cultural studies
  • economics
  • environmental sciences
  • film & media studies
  • history
  • international studies
  • law
  • literature
  • political science
  • sociology
  • spanish language

Students can pursue their personal interests AND fulfill their JHU academic requirements. Both credits and grades transfer back to Hopkins at the end of the program.

Most Hopkins students sign up for 15 hours of credit and all are required to take a Spanish language course.

Your language skills will improve rapidly because all classes are taught in Spanish.

TRAVEL AND SPECIAL EVENTS

The program includes trips to a number of Spanish towns and cities. This year students are traveling t

  • Seqovia
    Toledo, the Visigothic capital of Iberia;
  • Cordoba, capital of the Islamic Caliphate;
  • Avila, a walled city that once sat on the border between Christian and Muslim Spain;
  • Segovia, the town where Queen Isabella was proclaimed ruler of Castile;
  • Granada, capital of the last Moorish kingdom in Spain,
  • El Escorial, the monument Philip II built to his father and his dynasty;
  • Valle de los Caidos, the monument dictator Francisco Franco built for himself.

Students also enjoy a variety of cultural encounters - an evening at the theater, tapas in the heart of old Madrid, an introduction to the art of flamenco, etc.

The application deadline is Thursday 22 February 2007Application forms can be downloaded from here.  We encourage students to submit their applications earlier than the deadline if possible.

HOUSING REQUEST FORM

Each applicant must also fill out a Housing Request Form at the time of application.

ACADEMIC ADVISING STUDY ABROAD FORMS

Students submitting applications for the JHU in Spain program must also complete the three colored (blue, green & pink) study abroad forms from Dr Ruth Aranow in Academic Advising.  These forms must be completed and returned in good time in order to receive official permission from JHU to study abroad.  Copies of the forms can be collected from Dr Aranow in Academic Advising on the 3rd floor of Garland.  We request that you return the forms to Harry Sieber in Gilman 331 rather than directly to Dr Aranow.  We will take photocopies of the forms for our records and will then forward them to Dr Aranow.  Please note that the forms require signatures from your parents, from your departmental advisor and from Dean Susan Boswell, so please start to prepare these forms as early as possible.
