Language Placement Procedures and Requirements

The procedures students should follow when attempting to register for a GRLL language course are as follows:

French: If you have successfully taken the pre-requisite courses for the class you do not need to take the placement test.

  • Go online to http://www.jhu.edu/advising/placement.html and select French from the list. This will take you to a page explaining language placement and credit procedures. At the bottom of that page, select French again and it will take you to the online French placement test. You are required to take the test in order to determine the level for which you qualify before you are permitted to register.

  • Contact either Prof. Kristin Cook-Gailloud (kacg@mac.com) or an Administrative Staff Member (grll@jhu.edu) to inform one of them that you have taken the test and for which course you wish to be cleared for registration.

  • They will, in turn, contact the Homewood Registrar’s Office to convey permission for you to register.

German: If you have successfully taken the pre-requisite courses for the class you do not need to take the placement test.

  • They will, in turn, contact the Homewood Registrar’s Office to convey permission for you to register.

Italian: If you have successfully taken the pre-requisite courses for the class you do not need to take the placement test.

  • Go online and take the placement test at http://www.jhu.edu/advising/italian.html. You are required to take the test in order to determine the level for which you qualify before you are permitted to register.

  • Contact either Prof. Alessandro Zannirato (alessandro1@jhu.edu) or an Administrative Staff Member (grll@jhu.edu) to inform one of them that you have taken the test and for which course you wish to be cleared for registration.

  • They will, in turn, contact the Homewood Registrar’s Office to convey permission for you to register.

Portuguese:

  • Contact Prof. Mary Bensabat-Ott (maryott@jhu.edu) to obtain permission to register.

  • She will, in turn, contact the Homewood Registrar’s Office to convey permission for you to register.

Spanish: If you have successfully taken the pre-requisite courses for the class you do not need to take the placement test.

  • Go online to http://www.jhu.edu/advising/placement.html and select Spanish from the list. This will take you to a page explaining language placement and credit procedures. At the bottom of that page, select Spanish again and it will take you to the online Spanish placement test. You are required to take the test in order to determine the level for which you qualify before you are permitted to register.

  • Contact either Prof. Loreto Sanchez (lsanchez@jhu.edu), Prof. Barry Weingarten (barry.weingarten@jhu.edu)  or an Administrative Staff Member (grll@jhu.edu) to inform one of them that you have taken the test and for which course you wish to be cleared for registration.

  • They will, in turn, contact the Homewood Registrar’s Office to convey permission for you to register.
