Language Placement Procedures and Requirements
The procedures students should follow when attempting to register for a GRLL language course are as follows:
French
If you want to register for French, take the departmental placement test online. This multiple-choice test is individualized (self-adjusting to the student's level) and is not timed. It covers grammar, vocabulary and reading skills. After taking the exam, register for the appropriate course level indicated by your score. Registration is based on the Honor System, sign up directly for your class.
German
If you have successfully taken the pre-requisite courses for the class you do not need to take the placement test.
Go online to http://www.jhu.edu/advising/placement.html and select German from the list. This will take you to a page explaining language placement and credit procedures. At the bottom of that page, select German again and it will take you to the online German placement test. You are required to take the test in order to determine the level for which you qualify before you are permitted to register.
Contact either Prof. Deborah Mifflin (mifflind@jhu.edu) or an Administrative Staff Member (grll@jhu.edu); to inform one of them that you have taken the test and for which course you wish to be cleared for registration.
They will, in turn, contact the Homewood Registrar's Office to convey permission for you to register.
