Requirements

The French program at Johns Hopkins offers a major and minor in French.

Students interested in pairing French with another romance language or languages should consult the separate guidelines for the romance languages major.

Note: The following requirements apply for for all incoming JHU classes beginning with the Class of 2020 as well as for members of earlier classes who have elected to graduate under the set of major requirements adopted in 2016.

Students graduating under the old requirements should consult their adviser and/or the director of undergraduate studies in French for appropriate guidance.

French Major Requirements

Requirements for the major in French consist of successful completion of 10 courses (30 credits) beyond the Intermediate level (210.201–202). These include:

  • Two semesters of Advanced French (210.301 Achieving Accuracy; 210.302 Reaching Fluency)
  • Two semesters of Introduction to French Literature (212.333; 212.334)
  • La France Contemporaine (212.401)
  • Eloquent French (210.417)
  • At least four electives; of these
    • A minimum of two courses must be taken under the 212 prefix, of which at least one must be at the 400 level
    • One course may be an upper-level offering in French language (210.3xx/4xx)
    • One may be a French course taught in English (211 prefix)

Electives should be chosen with the approval of the director of undergraduate studies and of the student’s faculty adviser from the French section so as to form a coherent intellectual concentration.

Honors in French

Rising seniors with a cumulative GPA of 3.7 and above are encouraged to complete the honors thesis in French. The year-long, four-credit thesis is prepared under the close direction of a faculty mentor. The first semester is devoted to research and the preparation of an abstract, bibliography, and outline (212.429 Thesis Prep, 1 credit). During the second semester (212.430 Senior Thesis, 3 credits), the student composes a 30- to 40-page paper in French.

French Minor Requirements

Requirements for the minor in French consist of successful completion of seven courses (21 credits) beyond the Intermediate level (210.201–202), including:

  • Two semesters of Advanced French (210.301 Achieving Accuracy; 210.302 Reaching Fluency)
  • One semester of Introduction to French Literature (either 212.333 or 212.334)
  • La France Contemporaine (212.401)
  • Eloquent French (210.417)
  • One upper-level (300/400) elective taken under the 210 or 212 prefix
  • One upper level (300/400) elective taken under the 212 prefix
