Whatever your degree of exposure to French, we require that you take a placement exam before enrolling in French courses. The test must be taken regardless of the number of years you have formally studied the language, your Advanced Placement (AP) scores, or any prior experience such as a bilingual upbringing and schooling or having lived abroad.
The placement exam is available online year-round. For the most accurate placement recommendation, take it just before the semester you actually plan to enroll in coursework. It covers grammar, vocabulary, listening, and reading skills.
After completing the exam, you can register through SIS for the appropriate course level as indicated by your score. Registration is based on the honor system.
Please contact the director of the French language program, Dr. Kristin Cook-Gailloud, if you have any questions about placement.
