FRENCH MAJOR

MINOR IN FRENCH LITERATURE

Requirements consist of successful completion of seven courses beyond the Intermediate or High Intermediate level (210.201-202 or 210.203-204), including both semesters of Advanced Writing and Speaking French (210.301-302), both semesters of Introduction to French Literature (212.201-202), and three other advanced courses in French Literature (212.300-400 series). The student may substitute the Eloquent French course (210.417) for one of the courses from the 212.300-400 series.

A.  210.301 and 210.302 Advanced Writing and Speaking French
B.  212.201 and 212.202 Introduction to French Literature
C.  3 courses from the 212.3xx-4xx series OR 2 courses from the 212.3xx-4xx and 210.417 Eloquent French

 

MINOR IN FRENCH CULTURAL STUDIES

Requirements consist of successful completion of seven courses beyond the Intermediate or High Intermediate level (210.201-202 or 210.203-204), including:

A. two semesters of Advanced Reading and Writing in French (previously French Conversation and Composition) (210.301-302)

B.  two semesters of La France Contemporaine (211.401-402)

C.  Eloquent French or Real French

(note:  Eloquent French and Real French cannot both count towards the minor)

D.  two other advanced courses in 211.3xx-4xx and 212.3xx-4xx

ROMANCE LANGUAGES MAJOR

Students may complete a Romance language major in one of two configurations: by specializing in two or three of the Romance Languages offered by the department.

Dual Language Option (satisfy two languages as described below):

French

Advanced Writing and Speaking French  (210.301-.302)
Introduction to French Literature I (212.333) OR Introduction to French Literature II (212.334)
3 Upper Level Courses plus Senior Thesis or Independent Study

Spanish

Advanced Spanish I & II (210.311-312)
Intro to Spanish Literature (215.231)
3 Upper Level Courses plus Independent Study

Italian

6 Upper Level Courses (beyond Intermediate 210.252) plus Independent study

Three Language Option (satisfy three languages as described below):

Language I:

A.  Language Courses
If French: Advanced Writing and Speaking French I & II
If Spanish: Advanced I & II
If Italian: competency through Intermediate II

B.  Three Upper Level Courses
If French: Introduction to French Literature I or II plus 2 additional Upper Level courses
If Spanish: Intro to Spanish Literature plus 2 additional Upper Level courses
If Italian: 5 Upper Level courses

Language II:

A.  Language Courses
If French: Advanced Writing and Speaking French I & II
If Spanish: Advanced I & II
If Italian: competency through Intermediate II

B.  Three Upper Level Courses
If French: Introduction to French Literature I or II plus 2 additional Upper Level courses
If Spanish: Intro to Spanish Literature plus 2 additional Upper Level courses
If Italian: 5 Upper Level courses

Language III:

A.  Language Courses   
If French: Advanced Writing and Speaking French I & II

If Portuguese: competency through Intermed/Advanced

B. Two Upper Level Courses
If French: Introduction to French Literature I or II plus 1 additional Upper Level course
If Spanish: Intro to Spanish Literature plus 1 additional Upper Level course
If Italian: 4 Upper Level courses
If Portuguese: 4 Upper  Level courses:  Advanced Portuguese I (210.391), Advanced Portuguese II (210.392), Brazilian Culture and Civilization (211.394), and Contemporary Latin American Novel and Short Story (215.344)
